The challenge

Designers of air-conditioning equipment need to be able to calculate the properties of moist air. The psychrometric chart provides a graphical method of determining properties that are relevant in air-conditioning engineering, such as dew point, moisture content, enthalpy and specific volume, given the barometric pressure and two known properties of the moist air, such as dry-bulb temperature and wet-bulb temperature or relative humidity.

Using the psychrometric chart can be time-consuming when the designer needs to track the changes in properties as the composition and thermodynamic state of the moist air change as it passes through the equipment. In such circumstances the designer would benefit from a reliable, but much quicker, method of determining properties.

The solution

The psychrometric chart is constructed from formulae that reflect the behaviour of an ideal mixture of air and water vapour, and deviations from the ideal. The same formulae can be used to create a computer-based method that calculates the properties of moist air, given the barometric pressure and two known properties of the moist air.

Atkinson Science has created a Windows application to calculate the properties of moist air needed by air-conditioning engineers. The engineer supplies the barometric pressure, the dry-bulb temperature and one other property from the wet-bulb temperature, dew point, relative humidity, moisture content, adiabatic saturation temperature and vapour pressure. The application will run on any Windows PC and returns the required properties at the click of a button.
