Mathematical Modelling

It is not always necessary to deploy a large CFD program with all its resources to solve a problem in fluid flow and heat transfer. Often, perfectly acceptable results can be obtained by some simple mathematical modelling and some numerical analysis. In fact, an analytical solution to a problem may be available in the academic literature but has become forgotten or neglected because of the ready availability of general purpose CFD software. Creating a mathematical model often requires working from first principles and applying well-established laws such as those of Fourier and Fick. The general equations of fluid dynamics are complex but in some problems many of the terms are not relevant or significant and so the equations can be simplified to a form that can be solved analytically or by a simple numerical algorithm. On this page you will find examples of mathematical modelling being used to solve problems in fluid flow and heat transfer.
