Air Quality and Comfort in Buildings
Atkinson Science uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to create models of the
environment in occupied spaces or storage facilities. All of the factors that
influence the environment are taken into account in the CFD model, including
internal and external heating and cooling loads, the inlets and extracts of the
HVAC system, and the volume flows, heating and humidifying provided by the
system. Given this information, the model computes the air speed, temperature
and humidity everywhere in the space. Regions where the environmental
conditions may cause discomfort can be quickly identified. The model can be
used show whether remedial measures such as moving the locations of inlets or
adjusting the amount of heating and humidifying will improve the
environment.
A CFD model can provide the reassurance that a client needs that an HVAC system
will provide the required climate conditions throughout the whole space. It is
an invaluable tool when the space contains commodities that must be kept within
