Air Quality and Comfort in Buildings

Atkinson Science uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to create models of the environment in occupied spaces or storage facilities. All of the factors that influence the environment are taken into account in the CFD model, including internal and external heating and cooling loads, the inlets and extracts of the HVAC system, and the volume flows, heating and humidifying provided by the system. Given this information, the model computes the air speed, temperature and humidity everywhere in the space. Regions where the environmental conditions may cause discomfort can be quickly identified. The model can be used show whether remedial measures such as moving the locations of inlets or adjusting the amount of heating and humidifying will improve the environment.

A CFD model can provide the reassurance that a client needs that an HVAC system will provide the required climate conditions throughout the whole space. It is an invaluable tool when the space contains commodities that must be kept within strict temperature and humidity limits.
